About
Washburn Family Fishing
The Washburn family carries a long tradition of fishing guides, stretching back multiple generations.
It all began with Captain Josh’s great-grandfather, "Press" Pyle — a pioneer river guide on Oregon’s legendary Rogue River. Press was among the first to regularly traverse the Rogue from Grants Pass to the coast, running difficult sections like Rainie Falls long before modern gear made it common. His innovative design for a plywood drift boat eventually caught the attention of a leading aluminum drift boat manufacturer; that design remains the foundation for boats still built and used today.
Press guided many well-known guests over the years, including celebrities such as Patsy Cline, John Wayne, and author Zane Grey. His cabin sat directly across the river from Zane Grey’s own property, and he is even referenced in one of Grey's novels — a lasting nod to the family’s early place in Oregon fishing history.
Today, Captain Josh carries forward that same spirit and passion for fishing. Born and raised in Oregon, Josh has spent his entire life on the water. He began guiding drift boat trips on the Rogue River at just 21 years old, developing years of hands-on experience across Oregon’s rivers, bays, and offshore waters.
With Washburn Family Fishing, Captain Josh offers small group, family-friendly trips that blend generations of knowledge with personal service, safety, and a genuine love for Oregon’s fisheries.
